Portraits or Headshots? What is best for you or your team
Choosing the right photographic representation for your professional persona or team can feel like a daunting task. Do you opt for the sharp precision of a headshot or the narrative eloquence of a portrait? Fear not, for within this realm lies a world of opportunity to showcase your essence and connect with your audience. Let's dive into the depths of these visual options, unlocking their unique strengths and guiding you towards the perfect reflection of your brand.
Headshots: The Focused Window to Your Soul
Imagine a close-up, a captivating glance that draws the viewer directly into your eyes. This is the domain of the headshot, a succinct expression of you or your team’s professional identity. Its strength lies in its laser-like focus on your face, where expressions dance and micro-movements speak volumes. Headshots excel in situations where space is limited, like website bios, Linkedin profiles, or online directories. They offer a distilled essence of your persona, perfect for a quick, impactful introduction.
But headshots are more than just cropped portraits. Expert lighting sculpts your features, accentuates your best angles, and ensures crisp clarity. Subtle adjustments in camera angle and posture can convey professionalism, approachability, or even a hint of authority. A confident gaze, a warm smile, a determined set of the jaw – each nuance tells a story, shaping the first impression you make on the digital stage.
Portraits: Where Stories Unfold in Full Frame
Step back, broaden the canvas, and you enter the realm of the portrait. Here, you or your team’s presence extends beyond the confines of your face, encompassing the language of someone’s body, the textures of your or some one’s attire, and the whispers of your environment. Portraits weave a narrative, hinting at your personality, your work ethic, and the world you inhabit.
Imagine a relaxed pose against a backdrop of your office, hands resting thoughtfully on a desk adorned with carefully chosen props. Or picture a dynamic shot capturing you or your team in action, leading a team meeting or engrossed in creative flow. These portraits go beyond the static headshot, revealing facets of your professional life and fostering a deeper connection with your audience.
Size matters in the world of portraits. They demand ample space to allow the nuances of your expression and the details of your surroundings to resonate with the viewer. Think social media banners, blog posts, brochures, or dedicated website pages – all platforms where a fuller portrayal of your professional narrative can blossom.
The Right Choice: A Matter of Resonance and Context
So, which path should you choose? The answer lies not in rigid rules, but in the harmonious marriage of your brand identity and the intended platform. Headshots shine in their focused intensity, ideal for situations where a quick, impactful introduction is needed. Portraits, on the other hand, weave a richer narrative, perfect for capturing the breadth and depth of your professional story.
Consider the emotion you wish to evoke. A serious expression and folded arms in a headshot can project power and command respect. Conversely, a relaxed pose and a warm smile in a portrait can exude approachability and trust. Align your visual language with your brand message to ensure a congruent and impactful impression.
Ultimately, the choice between a headshot and a portrait is yours. Experiment, explore, and discover what resonates best with your brand and your audience. Remember, both options offer a powerful canvas to showcase your professional self, each with its own unique blend of storytelling and emotional impact. So, step into the light, embrace the art of visual storytelling, and let your professional portrait unveil the captivating narrative of your success.

Dave Baker
“I'm a Nashville guitar player who came to Cleveland to get some new photos. Capture Style did amazing job of creating a great natural outdoor setting (in the heart of the Cleveland flats) as well as providing many options with their indoor studio with regard to backdrops and lighting. I highly recommend Capture Style to anyone seeking a unique approach to their photo needs.”
Jenna

Michael
“Working with Howard is an adventure, I look forward to our sessions. He is brilliantly inventive with the locations he brings his subjects to, the lighting, and also in the way he communicates, leading his subjects through the shoot in an engaged manner where it's never boring and always alive. It's a collaboration, which is exactly what a photo shoot ought to be. Howard's process is similar to working on a film and the results of his process, the finished photographs, have depth, they tell stories and, most importantly, they present his subjects in an authentic way, far beyond conventional headshots and more like portraits.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Don't See Your Question Here? Call me at 440-517-8596

Absolutely!!The best thing to do is bring a couple of options. Since we don’t have a time limit for your session, we suggest that you bring something that makes YOU feel good. I, you only need to bring along shirts/ties/sport coatand blouses, unless you want to do three-quarter length shot. We like for you to have multiple looks, so make sure you have a nice range of clothing with you. We want you to feel good. There are a lot of things that can work, but my clients tend to shoot with greater success when they are wearing clothing they feel great in. Wear attire that reflects you and your personality. Thats the whole point of your pictures!! We are more than happy to do a zoom consult with you. Certain colors bring out certain emotions!
-
Because humans see the world horizontally, We prefer to shoot horizontally. Additionally, a horizontal frame allows you to get some space, so your headshot won't appear compressed or confined between the narrow walls of a vertical crop. The horizontal look is more contemporary and is a widely accepted format.
-
This is a question frequently asked. In a headshot, the most important information comes from your expression. We like to have you keep your clothing info around your shoulders and chest for you to feel your identity, too. If your eyes are above the center line, it makes for a more impactful image. As the frame adjusts to accommodate these features, the top of the head gets cropped. As long as the viewer gets a sense of your hairstyle, they can imagine your rest. They will still think you still have your entire head !!
-
Of course! We shoot what is called tethered (the camera is hooked uped to the computer) so you are able to see the pictures as we shoot them. This also allows me to help coach and instruct you with your facila expression. We can see what works well and what doesn’t. Plus we look at the pictures at the end of the session.
-
Once we are done, I send you a private link to all the pictures we took during the session. This gives you time to pick your best images. If you need any guidance at what you should pick, we are more than happy to help you. Once you decide, we send your pictures out to be professionally retouched.
-
For most men, it usually not needed . If you are worried about blemishes or scars, you can hire a make up person or we can fix it in post production. For most woman, depending on what your goal is, we leave the decision up to you. If you are doing a portrait session, we do recommend that you. We work with an amazing make up artist.
-
I ask that everyone come with their hair done as if they were presenting themselves to a casting director for an audition. Your headshot should match the way you appear in person regularly. You should be able to recreate your hair style like you do everyday.. Our makeup artist can do hair, but that is up to you if you want to hire them for that.

A professional headshot is a personal, professional, and branding tool. Your picture is your first impression to a possible employer, casting director, your clients and patients. Even a potential significant other!!
