So What is the difference between a Headshot and Portrait

Headshots and portraits have been confused for decades. They're both great ways to capture someone's face. But while the two terms are often used interchangeably, they actually mean different things. A headshot is a photo taken specifically for use on a resume, LinkedIn profile, or cover letter. For example, it might show up in an email signature block. These images tend to show people looking straight into the camera.

What is a Headshot?

A headshot is a photo taken specifically for use on a resume, LinkedIn profile, or cover letter. For example, it might show up in an email signature block. These images tend to show people looking straight into the camera. When taking a headshot, tI keep the subject's eye level at approximately 30 degrees above the horizon line. This allows the viewer to see the full length of the subject's face without having to turn his/her head. In my opinion, a good headshot is a great way to start building trust with potential clients and employers.I am not a fan of shooting vertically, as I feel it limits the creative freedom of my images. Horizontal frames allow me to create an open feeling within the frame, whereas a vertical frame tends to make everything look boxed in. I also believe that having the clothing and accessories off to one side helps to show who we are without being too distracting. However, if you do choose to go with a vertical frame, make sure that you include enough detail in the upper half of the photo. Also we see horizontally (landscape), if not we would be moving our head to the side!

Then What is a Portrait?

A portrait photograph is an image of a person or group of people taken from a single viewpoint with the intention of conveying information about the subject(s). The goal of a portrait photographer is to create a flattering representation of the subject's appearance.

In order for a portrait to look natural, the photographer must use proper lighting technique. Soft light is used when creating a flattering portrait. This type of light creates a warm glow over the subject's features. Strong backlighting is required to make the subject stand out against the background.

In addition to using the right lighting technique, I pay close attention to composition. When composing a portrait, the photographer needs to consider where the viewer will be standing when viewing the picture. If the viewer is sitting down, then the subject's facial expressions need to be carefully considered.
